How are steel decks and steel beams combined

The combination of the steel decks and the steel beams is actually very simple, that is, the two are combined by stud welding. The stud acts as shear resistance.

The welding on edge of the steel deck

First of all, let’s look at the welding of studs on the edge of the steel deck. The steel deck should be overlapped on the steel beam by at least 50 mm, perpendicular to the direction of the rib. Generally, the spacing of studs with a diameter of 16 is 190 mm, (take SD51-760 as an example) The maximum spacing in the specification is 350 mm. Parallel to the direction of the plate rib, the stud spacing of 16 is less than or equal to 600 mm.

The welding of the steel deck to the intermediate beam

Next is the stud connection of the steel deck to the intermediate beam, in the same direction as the vertical rib. However, attention should be paid to the beam width of steel beams. Generally, the design institute will issue instructions. If the width of the steel beam flange is less than 200 mm, a single row of studs should be used, and if 200mm≤the width of the steel beam flange ≤350mm, double rows of studs should be used.

According to this figure, we can also say that the lap joint of the steel deck plate and the plate, that is, the lateral lap joint in the picture, is through self-tapping screws, generally #12 (diameter 5), and the spacing is less than or equal to 900 mm.
